This shrine was built as a gesture of gratitude for protection during various calamities. It was commissioned by the Deputation of the Treasury of San Gennaro, a lay organisation that has promoted the saint’s cult and safeguarded his relics for centuries. In 1706, Lorenzo Vaccaro was tasked with the sculptures, creating only the two lively cherubs; the bust of the saint was by his son Domenico Antonio, housed in a shrine designed by Ferdinando Sanfelice, inspired by ephemeral altars used during the patron saint’s festivities.
