According to tradition, Castel Capuano was founded by William I in the late 12th century on the site of an earlier fortification guarding Porta Capuana. It was first a Norman royal palace, then Aragonese. In 1540, Viceroy Pedro de Toledo installed the Courts of Justice there. The castle was extensively modified in the second half of the 19th century. Inside, among the most evocative spaces, are the Hall of Busts and the 16th-century Chapel of the Sommaria, with stuccoes and frescoes by Pedro Rubiales, as well as the Chapel of the Prisons, with its frescoed vaults.
