The first early medieval church was built in the cella of the Temple of the Dioscuri (1st century AD), located at the summit of the forum. Assigned to the Theatines in 1538, it was rebuilt by the confrere Francesco Grimaldi (1583-1603), featuring a large double-flight staircase and incorporating the Roman pronaos. The two columns on the facade are the only ones to have survived the 1688 earthquake. The interior, with three naves in a Latin cross design, is decorated by the main artists present in the city after the Counter-Reformation. The apse and the transept vault were reconstructed after the bombings of 1943.
