The church, built in 1590 by Lateran Canonesses, is raised on a podium overlooking a square and is characterized by a high pronaos with pillars made of piperno, frescoed with landscapes by a Flemish painter. The most significant work inside was done mostly in the mid-17th century, when the church acquired its final form. Of great evocative power is the carved and gilded wooden ceiling, designed by Pietro De Martino (1634-39), featuring paintings by Massimo Stanzione (1640-47): the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Coronation of the Virgin.
