The first Benedictine church is documented in 902, later expanded until the 14th century, becoming one of the oldest and largest monasteries in the city. The new church was built starting in 1494, redesigned in 1537 by Giovanni Francesco Di Palma, and consecrated in 1571. After the earthquake of 1731, the facade was rebuilt by Giovanni Del Gaizo, while the piperno screens were created by Giovanni Battista Nauclerio (1737). The interior, rich and grandiose, retains the monumental 16th- century marble floor and valuable paintings and sculptures from the 16th to the 18th century.
