Founded in 1318, but rebuilt in 1343. The church was damaged in 1456 and restored between 1513 and 1540 by Ferdinando Manlio. Destroyed by a fire in 1757, it was reconstructed by Luigi Vanvitelli and completed by his son Carlo from 1760 to 1782. From the 16th century, the bell tower with its portal by Tommaso Malvito (c. 1500), the Carafa Chapel, the Treasure Chapel, and the Sacristy are still preserved. Forty-four Corinthian marble columns and the tall dome give the nave a majestic appearance. The attached hospital housed children who were abandoned in the so-called “wheel of the exposed.”
