Founded at the request of Robert of Anjou and Sancia, the church was built between 1310 and 1328 as a royal pantheon. The complex is dominated by the bell tower, with the first order being original, while the rest was rebuilt in 1604. The interior was transformed into one of the most stunning of 18th-century Italy, but was set on fire after the 1943 bombing; what survived was removed during subsequent restorations. Notable features include the tomb of King Robert (1343-45), the choir of the nuns, the majolica-tiled cloister of the Clarisses designed by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro (1739-42), and the Museum of the Work.
