The convent was founded in 1565 from the merger of two Benedictine female monasteries, originally of the Basilian order. Since 1907, it has been a university building, housing the Museum of Paleontology. The large cloister, designed by Giovanni Vincenzo Della Monica (1567-95), is a typical example of a Neapolitan convent from the Counter-Reformation period, with a subsequent informal garden. The church, rebuilt by Pietro D’Apuzzo (1626-45) and later decorated with marble in the 18th century, retains its original facade. In the apse is the 17th-century altar from the demolished Church of Santo Spirito di Palazzo.
