Documented as early as the 12th century, the church was rebuilt starting in 1301 and modified in the 17th and 18th centuries. Tommaso Aniello d’Amalfi, known as Masaniello, delivered his final speech here (1647) before being killed in the nearby convent. Behind the main altar is the chapel that houses the image of the Madonna Bruna (14th century), beloved by the Neapolitans. The bell tower, completed in the 17th century, is the tallest in the city (75 m) and appears to light up with fireworks during the celebrations of the Madonna del Carmine (July 16).
