The monastery was rebuilt between 1307-1316, by the will of Maria of Hungary, on a pre-existing foundation documented since 780. Expanded and modernized in the 17th century, it incorporates the 14th-century church. The current appearance is the result of a restoration (1928-34) that separated the old church from the new one. The original church houses the masterpiece by Tino di Camaino (1313) and, in the nuns’ choir, the largest cycle of 14th-century frescoes in Naples. The new church was built on a staircase by Giovan Giacomo Di Conforto (1617-1626). It now houses the Diocesan Museum.
