Porta Capuana was built in the late 15th century during the expansion of the city walls. This section is one of the few remaining parts of the Aragonese walls built in piperno stone, and stands as one of the finest examples of military architecture of its time, before the advent of artillery made such defenses obsolete. The marble arch by Giuliano da Maiano is flanked by the towers named “Honor” and “Virtue” and once marked the most important entrance to the capital. In 1535, the coat of arms of Charles V of Habsburg was added, while on the back is the statue of Saint Gaetano, an ex-voto after the plague of 1656.
