Monte di Pietà

Monte di Pietà

The Monte di Pietà was established in 1539 at the Giudecca to offer facilitated loans to needy citizens. The new monumental headquarters was built by Giovanni Battista Cavagna (1597-1605) facing the main axis of the expanding city. The solemn and airy atrium, supported by pillars, frames the Chapel of the Pietà (1598), one of the most significant examples of Counter-Reformation art in Naples. Notable features include the Pietà by Michelangelo Naccherino (1601) on the pediment and the allegories of Charity and Security by Pietro Bernini (1601).
