Pio Monte della Misericordia

Pio Monte della Misericordia

Built by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti between 1658 and 1670 to house the Pio Monte della Misericordia, the exterior of the palace foreshadows the charitable purposes of the institution facing the cathedral. The facade with its portico was designed to welcome the needy and emphasize the secular character of the building, concealing the entrance to the church, where the altarpiece depicts The Seven Works of Mercy (Le Sette opere di misericordia) by Caravaggio (1606-07). The Picture Gallery houses paintings from the Neapolitan schools of the 17th and 18th centuries.
