Opened by Alfonso I of Aragon, it is one of the most beautiful squares in Naples. The northeast side corresponds to the path of the Greek walls and is dominated by the apse of the basilica. To the west is the Petrucci Palace, owned by one of the barons involved in the famous conspiracy (1485). To the south is the Sangro di Casacalenda Palace, completed by Luigi Vanvitelli, but missing one bay due to the opening of Via Mezzocannone. Finally, there is the Corigliano Palace, with magnificent 18th- century interiors, and the Sangro Palace (16th century). At the center stands the Spire of San Domenico, started in 1658 and completed in 1737.
