It was built on a 6th-century church (remains in the transept) and on the Macellum. Construction began after 1270-75 by French architects, who built the apse, and was continued by local builders in the first half of the 14th century, reusing ancient columns. Modern restorations (1882-1944) removed the 17th- and 18th-century decorations, when the church was reinforced and renovated, with the exception of the facade by Ferdinando Sanfelice (1742), which incorporates the original portal. Notable features include the tomb of Catherine of Austria (1323) and the Cacace Chapel (1653).
