Cappella Sansevero

Cappella Sansevero

The chapel, also known as Santa Maria della Pietà dei Sangro, was founded in 1590 by Giovanni Francesco di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero, and later expanded by his son Alessandro (1613), who made it the family burial site; a bridge connected it to the palace until 1889. Between 1749 and 1771, Prince Raimondo di Sangro had the chapel redecorated according to a specific iconographic program, making it one of the most interesting complexes in the city. Striking for its realism is the Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sammartino (1753).
