In 1791, Francesco Sicuro redesigned the medieval market, known as the moricino, and placed the church at the center of the large square, replacing two chapels dedicated to the Holy Cross and the Souls in Purgatory, which had been destroyed by a fire in 1781. The first chapel was built where Corradino of Swabia was beheaded (1268), while the other stood on a mass grave for victims of the plague (1656). The facade alternates voids and solids, framed panels and arched niches with statues of saints in a rigid pattern of pilasters, crowned by a majolica-tiled dome.
