The church, known as the Purgatorio ad Arco, was built in the 17th century by the Holy Work of the Souls in Purgatory (1604), which collected funds for Masses in suffrage—hence the intense repetition of skulls and crossed tibias—which has become the symbol of the Neapolitan veneration of the dead. Cosimo Fanzago was likely the author of the first order of the facade; the portal dates to 1716. The hypogeum is a true underground church, sober and essential. The sacristy and oratory rooms now house the Museum of the Opera.
