The complex, also known as all’Olmo, was founded in 1342 by Queen Sancia to house women in difficulty. The church was redone in the 16th century by Gabriele D’Angelo and later by Dionisio Lazzari (1684), with an elliptical floor plan, making it one of the most uniform examples of Neapolitan Baroque architecture. The interior is covered with polychrome inlaid marble (1738-40), with four organs, a choir with gilded carvings, and paintings by Luca Giordano. In the first half of the 20th century, a hospital was established in the monastery and later named after Cardinal Ascalesi.
