The complex was founded in 902, when the Benedictines abandoned Pizzofalcone to escape the Saracen attacks. The monastery was rebuilt starting in 1490 and reached its current configuration in the 16th century, becoming one of the oldest, largest, and wealthiest in Naples. In the Cloister of the Plane Tree, there are frescoes by Antonio Solario, known as the Zingaro, depicting the life of Saint Benedict (early 16th century). Since 1835, it has been the home of the State Archive, holding the richest and most valuable documentation of the history of Southern Italy.
