The site takes its name from the airy Merchant Loggias built after 1569 on the land previously occupied by the monastery of San Demetrio, after Spanish artillery had bombarded the old loggias in Piazza dell’Olmo in 1547, which were later called Banchi Nuovi. The market was abolished in the early 17th century, and in 1616, the loggia was purchased by the Congregation of Barbers, which had left its premises on Via Tribunali for the construction of the Girolamini. The loggia was transformed into a chapel and dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, the name given to the adjacent ramps opened in 1569.
